VoIP phone systems and VoIP telephony system are beneficial for businesses because they allow for instant communication in remote locations, using a variety of different devices, and without paying long-distance charges or roaming fees. Because VoIP lines are connected through independent networks, there’s a level of security in these unified communications that regular phone lines and video conferencing platforms simply don’t have.
That being said, it’s still possible for hackers to get into a business telephone system that runs on VoIP technology, so it’s important that you take every precaution possible with your business’s communication system in order to ensure that every piece of data is protected.
Here are just a few simple steps that you can take to bolster the security of your business’s unified communications systems:
- Use secure passwords, and change them often. It’s always easier to pick that “password1234” when you can’t think of anything else that you’ll remember, but these keywords are also for cyberhackers to figure out. Even if you have a bunch of employees who need the same keywords to access a system, it’s better to keep that password unique complicated.
- Train employees on safe internet security. It’s definitely important to set guidelines for internet and phone line use in the workplace, and it’s also important to educate your employees about the types of viruses, system glitches, or warning messages that might pop up if something is amiss.
- Use updated firewall and security systems. The older your business security systems are, the more likely they can be hacked into. Many security system providers provide clients with current program updates if a new virus is on the loose, or will let you know when your system needs to be updated.
